New MS in Genetic Counseling – Indiana State University
We are excited to announce that Indiana State University has received accreditation through the Accreditation Counseling for Genetic Counseling to begin offering an MS in Genetic Counseling.
No more applications are being accepted for the class starting in fall of 2016, but interested individuals can apply by January 1st for the subsequent years. We will be accepting our first class of 8 students begin in the fall of 2016.
An MS in genetic counseling is a two year Master’s degree. Most students in interested in genetic counseling have an undergraduate degree in a variety of disciplines including biology, genetics, psychology, public health, and nursing. The Indiana State University (ISU) offers training in all aspects of medical genetics and basic psychological counseling. We provide classroom, laboratory, and a variety of hands-on clinical experiences. These rotations including pediatric, prenatal, adult, and specialty genetics clinics which allows customization. While some rotations are within 1 to 2 hours of the ISU campus, others are as far away as Seattle, WA. This way, students can get a broad range of clinical experiences in a variety of hospital settings.

This is the 33nd program in the United States. There are only two programs in Indiana – ISU Program in Terre Haut and the Indiana University Medical Center Progam on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. The need for genetic counselors is increasing as genetic information is used in more and more aspects of healthcare.
