Nov 8, 2018 Fall INGC Meeting and GC Awareness Day
Save the date:
Our fall meeting with be held virtually on November 8th at 12:00 EST. We look forward to meeting then.
This is coincidentally Genetic Counselor Awareness Day!
November 8th is also the second annual Genetic Counselor Awareness Day (#IAMAGeneticCounselor). According to the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC), this day is to empower genetic counselors, raising awareness and visibility of genetic counselors in communities and institutions, and helping consumers understand the important role genetic counselors can play in their healthcare.
NSGC will provide materials and templates to spread the awareness. Below are tips provided by NSGC to get started:
- Speak with the public relations or communications department at your institution to see if they can help promote the work genetic counselors do.
- Begin researching local health or feature reporters and producers. Get their email addresses so you can work with them using the Genetic Counselor Awareness Day media materials, when available.
- Consider whether you have compelling patient stories and ask those people if they’d be willing to publicly share their story. The media often loves to hear patient and human interest stories! Important Tip: Make sure to get the patient’s permission in writing.
- Brainstorm what you want to share publicly about your job and what makes you so standout in the community. A unique angle helps a journalist tell a new story.
