REPORTS TO:  Genetic Counselor at Maternal Fetal Medicine & Volunteer Services

SUMMARY: Individuals serving as a volunteer at the Maternal Fetal Medicine office will support the genetic counselor and the clinical associates in the office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Data entry for the Kate Cares Stillbirth Assessment Program:  The volunteer will enter data into an Access database on patients who have experienced a stillbirth at one of the participating hospitals.  The data includes laboratory test results and relevant pregnancy and medical history information. The volunteer MUST demonstrate discretion and the ability to observe confidentiality in the handling of sensitive information. 
  2. Attending Kate Cares Review Meetings:  The volunteer will be invited to attend the monthly Kate Cares Stillbirth Assessment Review Meetings at IU Health University Hospital from 3-5 pm on the second Wednesday of the month.  If the volunteer is able to attend, he/she will be responsible for taking notes of the case review discussions during the meeting.  The volunteer will also have the option of presenting a case during one or more of the review meetings.
  3. Secondary Accountabilities: The volunteer may assist with other duties within the Maternal Fetal Medicine office including faxing and filing.  The volunteer will be invited to observe genetic counseling sessions and will be responsible for performing a time audit during the sessions. The volunteer may also be asked to give an oral or written presentation to the genetic counselor at the end of the full time of service.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Commitment and accountability to the IU Health Culture of Service
  • Must have an interest in pursuing a future in the genetic counseling profession
  • Must have some computer knowledge; knowledge with databases, including Access would be helpful, but is not required
  • Must work well with individuals of all ages, walks of life and backgrounds
  • Must be able to take direction as well as work with minimal supervision when necessary
  • Must demonstrate discretion and observe confidentiality in handling sensitive information

 

Commitment: 4-8 hours per week for two and a half months (June through mid-August)

Days of the Week:  One day per work week (Monday through Friday); the day of the week is flexible and will be selected based on the availability of the genetic counselor and the volunteer

Times: Blocks of time are flexible but will be restricted to 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
