According to the Bulletin:
“Effective November 1, 2017, the Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) will expand its list of eligible providers to include genetic counselors. This new provider type will allow professionally licensed genetic counselors to enroll as IHCP providers. These providers will be classified using the following provider type and specialty code: Provider type 36 –Genetic Counselor and provider specialty 800.
To enroll with the IHCP under the new provider type 36, genetic counselors must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI) and hold a valid professional license as a genetic counselor, as defined in Indiana Code IC 25-17.3. Although licensed physicians and nurses are not required to be licensed as a genetic counselor to provide genetic counseling within their scope of practice, that they cannot use the title “genetic counselor” unless licensed as such.”
